Highlights: Solarolo, Rocca Sforzesca in Bagnara, imposing Rocca in Lugo

Cycle out of Faenza this morning to discover the fortresses and small villages of the Romagna plains. Flat easy cycling takes us first to Solarolo and the remnants of its fortified gates. In Bagnara, visit the Rocca Sforzesca which houses an archaeological museum. The itinerary continues through the orchards of Romagna to Lugo, characterized by the imposing castle and the Pavaglione, an important eighteenth-century legacy of civil architecture, important to the commercial development of the area. Originally destined for the silkworm market, today it's still the site of important commercial activities.

The Ideal City of Cosimo de' Medici

Today's ride begins with the ascent to Monte Fortino, where we'll take in a sweeping panorama from the hills, over the Casentino wilderness, and all the way to the sea. The winding descent leads to Terra del Sole, the ideal city commissioned in 1564 by Cosimo de' Medici as a fortified city and a splendid example of Renaissance military and urban engineering. Check out the castle in Castrocaro Terme and treat yourself to a delicious pastry before returning to the farm. On the way back, you can choose whether to continue towards Faenza to see the famous ceramics or return to the farmhouse for a dip in the pool.
